Unbodied

Ongoing work made to record the material and temporal shifts of transition through prosthetic experiments and live casts. By preserving, altering, and reconstructing elements of my own body—hair, skin, and form—the work engages with questions of embodiment, absence, and the archive of the self. The pieces function as both documentation and intervention, both marking the liminality of transition as well as having an active role in forming it. In tracing what grows from what is shed, Unbodied considers how the body is not only lived but also remembered, adapted, and rebuilt over time.

Silicone and plaster cast of chest pre-top surgery

Wig made from Julian’s own hair pre-shaved head. Yes, this did take forever. They still have nightmares about forgetting to take it off while working out. Currently in progress on a drag performance that combines prosthetics from pre- medical transition

Early video work experimenting with subtle changes in gender expression

Sock Packers

Julian was interested in the ways that gender expansive people can “construct” their gender expression. Sock Packers reimagines the classic trans sock-packing trick into a sustainable, refined, and gender-affirming prosthetic. Julian envisioned and crafted a customizable pattern for packers using upcycled socks. Designed specifically for transmasculine individuals, this project and proceeding workshops offer hands-on session to learn practical sewing and patterning techniques through the design and fabrication of a custom wearable prosthetic.

Participants use lonely socks (who lost their partner to the wash) to craft comfortable, functional packers tailored to unique needs. Attendees leave with a custom-made packer while learning valuable sewing skills that can be applied to future creative projects.

Visualizations

Julian began documenting their gendered experience privately via visual art a few months prior to top surgery. Here are a few selections from the work they made at this time. Work includes acrylic on canvas, natural dyes, mixed media, collage, and more.
